Chapter 12

All Tuesday night, Nya was a hot mess.

A hot and bothered mess.

I don’t want there to be any confusion. I like you, Nya. A lot.

She’d dreamed about having sex with him. Scorching, toe-tingling sex.

What killed her was the fact that there’d been no text from him. No call. He’d kissed her, and left her wanting more...and he hadn’t even sent a message to let her know that he was thinking of her.

Was he thinking about her? Or had he been able to kiss her and go on about his day?

I like you, Nya. A lot.

Nya liked him, too. And her resolve to push him away had all but disappeared. He’d occupied her thoughts all of Tuesday night, and she’d woken Wednesday morning hoping more than anything that she would hear from him today.

It was her birthday. And today of all days, she wanted to know that he was thinking of her.

Of course, she hadn’t told him that it was her birthday, so he couldn’t know. But a call just because, or even a text would brighten her mood.

Especially since Sabrina had forgotten her birthday. She’d left first thing in the morning for a conference booking, and Nya knew that she was busy. But still...it stung a little that her friend hadn’t remembered that Nya turned thirty-four today.

Nya woke her phone from sleep mode and pulled up the photo of Tyler she’d saved.

She all but salivated every time she looked at the picture. After that kiss yesterday, she thought for sure that she would hear from him.

And today of all days, it mattered.

Why don’t you just text him? Tell him it’s your birthday?

But even as the idea came to Nya, she dismissed it. She wanted him to reach out to her because he missed her, not because he felt some sense of obligation.

At three o’clock, Nya’s phone trilled with a text message. She quickly grabbed her phone and checked her messages. It was from a friend, wishing her a happy birthday.

Nya frowned. Had Tyler forgotten her?

The very idea had Nya’s stomach twisting, but then she remembered what Mason had said. That Tyler was one of the good guys.

She also remembered Tyler’s own words. I get that you’ve been hurt. So I know you want to be cautious.

Was that why he was giving her space? Any other guy would have already followed up and tried to take her to bed.

Clearly, Tyler wasn’t like other men.

Nya didn’t want to want him, but there was no denying the truth. Maybe if it weren’t her birthday, she could try to push her desires aside and remember her vow to abstain from dating. But no girl wanted to be alone on her birthday.

Just before four o’clock, Sabrina breezed into the studio, harried and out of breath. She off-loaded her heavy camera bag onto the floor then pushed her sunglasses into her hair. “Oh, my goodness. That was a crazy day.”

Nya got to her feet. “Let me help you.” She rounded the desk and took the smaller camera bag and tripod from Sabrina.
